Erasure''s 5th Album
Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020
This is the last Erasure album where Bell and Clark seem to be fully in sync with original melodies and strong lyrics. Wish the live CD contained more than just material from the Chorus album but the remixes and B-sides are strong.

One of the best, and most talented bands which never received the proper recognition. If you listen to any current music, you can hear an Erasure sample in about 1/2 of them! Darker, eerier... brilliant! One of their best!

Erasure were and are still me favourite pop band. Godfather of the analogue synthesizer Vince Clarke spins some of his most memorable music on this seminal album, using only monophonic recording techniques to build chords through separate tracks resulting in a genuinely timeless sound. Andy is on top form, both in the lyrical writing and voice (when is he not?) And overall the album contains amazing classic pop bangers like Love To Hate You and Breath of Life to the sublime, poetic and movingly beautiful Am I Right? I''ve never tired of hearing this album (twas my first erasure record!!) And the re-release sounds as good as ever. Disc two contains some interesting tracks and remixes- nothing too out of the ordinary but the disc is worth it for the Clarke remixes and Am I Right extended track alone. For such an underrated and neglected band this represents the pinnacle of pop genius that still now knocks any of today''s chart toppers into a cocked hat.

So weit so gut. Aber von den vier Hits "Chorus", "Breath Of Life", "Am I Right?" und "Love To Hate You" gibt es lediglich jeweils EINEN EINZIGEN Remix. Recherchiert man nach "Chorus (Fishes In The Sea)" (Ben Grosse Remix), "Love To Hate You" (KROQ Blunder Version) und "Am I Right?" Hier eine Auflistung was alles von den Originalen fehlt: "Chorus": Pure Trance Mix; Transdental Trance Mix; Aggressive Trance Mix; Vegan Mix "Breath Of Life": 7''Inch Mix; Dave Bascombe Remix; Accapella Dub Remix; Joey Beltram Remix; Remix; Stripped Mix - lediglich der Divine Inspiration Mix ist vorhanden "Am I Right?": Dave Bascombe Remix; The Grid Remix "Love To Hate You": Paul Dakeyne Remix; Bruce Forest Mix; LFO Modulated Filter Mix Die fehlenden B-Seiten erspare ich mir jetzt.

Erasure were on a roll, creatively and commercially speaking when they started the nineties with this gorgeously electro 10 track album. Gone were the strumming guitars and acoustic pianos (not that there''s anything wrong with that) from previous albums, replaced by layers of synthesiser sounds and digital rhythms. There were a couple of hits off Chorus including the title track but for me it''s an album where any song could''ve been a single. My personal favourites are "Waiting For The Day", "Turns The Love To Anger", "Am I Right" and the magnificent closing track "Home". I also love the albums overall sound mix courtesy of Dave Bascombe who had produced Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears a couple of years before his work here. The first run packaging, which I still have, was also something unique for its time as being one of the earliest deluxe edition cd releases. It came in a fold out clam shell style cardboard box with the full lyric booklet and a set of postcards inside with the cd on a plastic tray stuck to the bottom of the box. Later releases would be in the standard plastic jewel case. Of course greater achievements were just around the corner with the phenomenal succes of the Abba-esque EP. Four tracks of Abba magic given the very distinct Erasure sound and one of the few times Benny and Björn have allowed another artist to rearrange their music. But I digress. Chorus is where the sound of that ep originated and if you''re new to Erasure it''s a great place to begin. "Am I Right, Am I Wrong Or Am I Just Dreaming..."
